Sweet Potato Cheesecake

A Juneteenth Reflection

Galatians 5:1

Juneteenth is not just a part of black culture, but our American heritage. Let’s take the time to reflect on what freedom means on Juneteenth from a Christian perspective.

Sweet Potato Cheesecake:

24 oz cream cheese (3 -8oz bricks)

½ cup sour cream

1 cup dark brown sugar

⅓ cup granulated sugar

4 eggs

15 oz can sweet potatoes

1 tbsp vanilla extract

1 tsp ground cinnamon

¼ tsp nutmeg

Directions:

Makes two 10-inch pies with premade crust.  Bake on 325 for 35-40 minutes.  Pie is done when the edges are set, the top is dry, and the center is just slightly jiggly.

Galatians 5:1

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

On June 19, 1865–two and half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Major General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and read General Order Number 3: “The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”  Those who heard those words proclaimed realized that they had been working as slaves, when in fact, they were already free..

So now the Juneteenth holiday, short-hand for June Nineteenth, is held to commemorate the Emancipation Proclamation.  I remember my mother would often say at our 4th of July cookouts growing up–this is Independence Day, but we also have another day in June when we celebrate our freedom as Black people.  It means a lot, that now our entire nation celebrates Juneteenth as the newest federal holiday–because the abolishment of the brutal and immoral institution of slavery–isn’t just black history, it is American history.  A history that we all owe to ourselves as a nation to acknowledge and build upon for a better future.

For believers, there are other days of freedom that we celebrate.  There is the day that Jesus died on the cross and bore the sins of the world upon his shoulders.  There is the day that he was resurrected, and broke the chains of sin and the sting of death forever.  Galatians 5:1 reads “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
