Devotional:

“He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth.”

John 1:10-14 NRSV

The Gift of Family

The gospel of John shows us that the gift of salvation did not begin as a baby conceived by the Holy Spirit. Jesus existed before the creation of the world.  Jesus stepped out of eternity and into humanity.  Yet the reception among humanity was mixed.  Some believed, some didn’t.  But for those who believed, the word says that Jesus gave them power to become children of God.

At Christmas, we not only have the gift of Jesus, but the gift of family.  But because of the will of God.  A gift of a family beyond your nuclear family, or associated friends, or clubs. You have the gift of a God-given family. So how can you be alone?  You may not have the Hallmark Christmas Movie family, but you have a family of believers that God has brought into your life, don’t you?  So take time to give thanks and spend time with the God-given family of brothers and sisters in faith that have been a home to you and encouraged you through many different phases of your life.
