Devotional:
“In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.””
Luke 1:39-45 NRSV
A Gift of Friendship
Sometimes you need to talk to someone who has been there before. Sometimes this is a cousin or relative like Mary and Elizabeth. Elizabeth, after many unsuccessful years, was pregnant and she was expecting a child—it would be John the Baptist, the forerunner to Jesus. She knew that the supernatural was happening, and that Mary was carrying the Messiah. She also understood how hard it was to live out God’s plan, when others didn’t understand. She and Zechariah had their own encounter with angels and a miraculous birth story.
Often the people in your family are well meaning, but they don’t get it. But God has placed people in your life who will get it. If you are going through something specific right now, look for your people. Look for people of faith who get it. And run to them. It may be a friend, it may be a support group, it may be a grief group, it may be a trusted coworker.
Don’t think you have to go through this alone. God specifically called Elizabeth to a parallel mission, as she would miraculously give birth to John the Baptist. If you don’t know already, ask God to reveal who that person is in your life that you can go to for encouragement and support, who is going through or has been through the same thing. They will get it. And God knows it. It is the Gift of Friendship.
