For this sweet devotion I am sharing an old fashioned tea cake recipe from the cookbook “Jubilee: Recipes from Two Centuries of African American Cooking” by Toni Tipton-Martin.

The devotional is based on Matthew 13:33 “A Little Goes a Long Way”

Tea Cakes

5 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

¼ tsp bakin soda

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon ground or freshly grated nutmeg

1 stick (4 oz) butter at room temp

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

¼ cup buttermilk

1 tsp vanilla extract

Demerara sugar or turbinado sugar for sprinkling

Mix and refrigerate batter for at least an hour.

Roll out and cut dough into cookies with a biscuit cutter

Or cut into squares while still warm after baking.

Bake on 350 for 8 minutes.
