Christmas Gingerbread House

Christmas Series: Week 3: Joy in Sharing

Luke 1:39-45

Take time for some inspirational baking with the weekly Christmas Dessert Devotion series! 4 weeks of the best Christmas cookie recipes and 4 inspiring devotionals. Week 3 is the ”Joy in Sharing.”

Gingerbread House

Graham crackers (traditional box)

3 tbsp merengue powder

1lb (16oz) powdered sugar

4 tbsp water

1 can of store-bought icing for decorating

Directions:

Mix the powdered sugar, merengue powder, and water to create a royal icing that will serve as the “glue” for the gingerbread house.  Watch the devotional video for instructions to assemble the house using graham crackers.  Let the house sit for about 15 minutes to harden.  Decorate your house with candy using your favorite store bought icing mixed with 1-2 tablespoons of merengue powder.  Trust me, this will taste better than the royal icing!

Devotional:

Luke 1:39-45

39 In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, 40 where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42 and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43 And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? 44 For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.”

Imagine what Mary is going through.  She was willing to be God’s servant, whatever that meant, but now things have gotten real.  She said yes to God about having this child. Now it’s getting a little murky in how this plan will really work out…with her family, her reputation, her betrothed Joseph, her life (if they decide she has committed adultery)…who knows!

Luke tells us that in all this drama, Mary sets out with haste (and that tells us all we need to know). She goes to a place where she can feel safe—with Elizabeth.  When Elizabeth calls blessings upon her and offers assurance that what is happening to her and to Mary is a blessing (read…not a curse)…whew, Mary sang.
