Devotional:
Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his ; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Back to Basics
When it comes to my own life, sometimes I find that it is good to get back to the basics. As my kids have gone back to school, many times the first week or so begins with review and even assessments. The teachers want to know, do you know the basics.
How are the building blocks of my spiritual life going? What does the foundation look like? How is it holding up?
One of the foundations of our spiritual life is worship. We can worship the Lord wherever we are, in our everyday conversations, in our prayers throughout the day, we can even break out into a song of worship.
And in addition to our solo worship, there is communal worship. I know there are people that say that you don’t need to go to church to be a believer. But let me tell you what you are missing out on…
John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, will talk about worship as a means of grace. It is a way to experience the grace and love of God—to regain that connection—whether it is through the sermon, the music, or the spoken liturgy. John Wesley would say that even the company of your fellow believers in ‘holy conversation’ is a way to experience God’s grace in your life.
So if you feel a little off lately, a little disconnected. Get back to the basics, that’s your personal meditation and praise, as well as recommitting to worship with other believers. Hold yourself accountable to one of the basics as Christian believers —and that is worship.
