French Strawberry Cake
Peace of Cake: In Doing the Right Thing
Isaiah 32:77
The kitchen can be a happy place where your mind can be at peace. Check out all of my devotions as we learn to bake peace into our lives every day with the Peace of Cake series. This Strawberry Cake is a light, fluffy cake with a custard-like center. It’s the perfect cake for a small gathering. I used freshly-picked strawberries that my son brought home from a school trip to the strawberry patch. He was so proud that his ‘hand-picked’ strawberries were the centerpiece of this cake recipe!
French Strawberry Cake
1 stick salted butter (softened)
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
1 ¼ tsp baking powder
½ cup sour cream
2 cups of fresh whole strawberries (sliced)
Directions:
In a mixing bowl, whisk the flour and baking powder. In a stand mixer, beat the butter and sugar for 5 minutes until it looks like fluffy sand. Slowly add the eggs, then vanilla extract. On low speed, carefully add the flour mixture to the batter, alternating with the sour cream. Mix just until blended. Stir in the strawberries by hand, then pour the batter into a greased 9-inch round pan (with 2-inch sides). Sprinkle ¼ cup sugar on top of the batter before baking in the oven on 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. The center will be custard-like but not jiggly when it is done.

Devotional:
Isaiah 32:77: “The effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.”
This passage is a part of Isaiah’s prophecy to the people of Israel. He prophesies that Judah will be punished for their disobedience and following after other gods. They will experience defeat and ultimately exile. Their homeland will be deserted and fall into ruin. Yet, God promised, when they choose righteousness, ultimately, the effect will be peace.
We see the truth of that promise even today. Have you ever done the wrong thing, and then afterwards, you just couldn’t rest? Even if you got away with it, even if our friends tell us “it’s okay don’t beat yourself up about it”, or our company policy technically allows it…we cannot be at peace. When we don’t do right by God, the Holy Spirit gets a hold of you, and you cannot rest. You cannot have peace. When you are not right with God, it keeps you up at night, it gnaws at your conscience, it runs continually in the back of your mind.
Often times, choosing the right way is the hard way. But it is the path that leads to peace. When you are right with God, you can sleep at night, you can find rest, and you can experience peace because you have done the right thing.
