Old Fashioned Tea Cakes

5 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

¼ tsp baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon ground or freshly grated nutmeg

1 stick (4 oz) butter at room temp

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

¼ cup buttermilk

1 tsp vanilla extract

Demerara sugar or raw sugar for sprinkling

Directions:

Mix and refrigerate batter for at least an hour.

Roll out and cut dough into cookies with a biscuit cutter 

Or cut into squares while still warm after baking.

Bake on 350 for 8 minutes.

Jeremiah 33:14-16

The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah.  In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.  In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: "The LORD is our righteousness."

In the time of Jeremiah, the people of Israel were exiled from their homeland after their defeat at the hands of Babylon.  They long for justice that would make things right again.  For the people of Israel that would mean regaining sovereignty and living again in peace and safety in their own homeland again.  They longed for leadership, direction, and justice in a time where their world has been turned upside down, and we can relate.  Christmas is a time to reflect on how the year has gone for us.  And we have longed for justice this year, longed for things to be made right, longed for leadership that we can trust, longed for God to do something….[See the YouTube video for more of this devotional.]
